Student answer (Band 5.0)

The maps illustrate the features of the looks of a university cafe after its reconstruction. Its also compare the given layout of the cafe after and before redesigned.

Overall, in the map, there is huge cgange in staff dining rooms after reconstruction. Then, outside the cafe some seating tables are added for customers, and other rooms are replaced with new decoration.

In the first map, on north-west side of cafe, there is a room where kitchen and serving area (all food and drink) are located. Dining rooms for staff are on north side of a hall, and at centre area there are tables and chairs for customers. Afterthat, bin area for waste food on east side of room, whereas toilets on south-east side at corner of hall.

After redesigned, the kitchen area remained same, but the serving area replaced into hot meals. Similarly, the staff dining rooms are also replaced into two room that are coffee bar and take away food. There is a new area is added called salad bar. In additions, the name of bin area was changed and named recycling bins, the toilets area is remained same in that place. Some extra place is added in south side of restuarants for outdoor activities like barbecue.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The student attempts to summarise the main changes shown in the two maps, noting the transformation of the staff dining rooms into a coffee bar and take-away food area, the addition of a salad bar, and the introduction of outdoor seating and a barbecue. However, the overview is somewhat vague ('huge cgange', 'other rooms are replaced with new decoration'), and some details are imprecise. For instance, the kitchen is described as being on the 'north-west side' when it is in the upper-left, and the description lacks a cohesive, well-structured summary of the overall spatial transformation. Furthermore, the introduction contains typos ('Its also compare') and awkward phrasing. This performance aligns with a Band 5.5, as it addresses the task and identifies key features, but remains somewhat underdeveloped and contains inaccuracies in reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is organized into four paragraphs, following a logical progression from an introduction to an overview, and then detailing the original layout followed by the redesigned layout. Paragraphing is attempted appropriately. However, the use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical or unnatural, such as 'Afterthat' (written as one word), 'After redesigned', and 'In additions'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow is hindered by repetitive sentence structures and cohesive errors. This corresponds to a Band 6.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe common architectural and layout features like 'kitchen', 'serving area', 'tables and chairs', and 'toilets'. However, there are notable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'cgange' instead of change, 'restuarants' instead of restaurant, and awkward collocations like 'the serving area replaced into hot meals' instead of 'the serving area was replaced by hot meals'. The range of vocabulary is limited, and attempts at less common items result in inaccuracies. This places the lexical resource at Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but grammatical control is weak throughout. There are frequent errors in verb forms, voice, and prepositions, such as 'Its also compare' (incorrect subject-verb agreement/form), 'the serving area replaced into' (passive voice error), 'a new area is added called' (redundant phrasing), and 'the toilets area is remained same' (incorrect active/passive hybrid). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but grammatical errors frequently cause minor distraction for the reader. This performance is consistent with a Band 5.0.
