Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarise the changes shown in the two maps of the college cafe. While the main features are touched upon, such as the relocation of the serving areas and the addition of the outdoor seating and barbecue, the overview is weak and lacks a clear summary of the overall transformation. Furthermore, there are some inaccuracies in describing spatial relationships, such as the position of the salad counter and doors. The student attempts to compare the before and after states, but the development of ideas is limited by frequent descriptive inaccuracies and a lack of clear structuring. To improve, the writer should focus on identifying major overarching trends rather than listing minor details haphazardly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response lacks a clear paragraph structure, presenting the description in dense blocks of text with run-on sentences. Cohesive devices are minimal and sometimes inaccurate, leading to a disjointed reading experience. For example, transitions between the description of the old layout and the new layout are abrupt, with phrases like 'After the cafe is redesgined' used simply rather than woven into a cohesive comparative narrative. Referencing is occasionally confusing, making it difficult for the reader to follow the exact spatial progression across the maps. Proper paragraphing—separating the introduction, the old layout, and the new layout—would significantly enhance coherence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, frequently relying on simple terms like 'cafe', 'kitchen', 'door', 'table', and 'chairs'. There are multiple spelling errors throughout the text, including 'redesgined', 'are', 'seperated', 'theres', and 'outdoor' (written as 'a outdoor'). Less common lexical items are attempted with low accuracy or unnatural collocation. While the vocabulary is minimally adequate to convey the basic subject matter, the frequency of errors in spelling and word choice restricts the score to the lower bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical range is quite limited, consisting mostly of simple and attempted complex sentences that frequently contain structural errors. There are numerous punctuation and capitalization issues, such as missing spaces after periods and missing commas. Sentences often run together without proper conjunctions, as seen in 'The given plan demonstrates that the look of kitchen before and after it was redesgined .In the plan that is given before...'. Verb tense usage is inconsistent, switching awkwardly between past and present descriptions. Frequent basic errors impede smooth reading and demonstrate a weak control over complex grammatical structures.
