The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The map illustrates the changes that took place in a college cafe in the past and present.
Overall, the college cafe has undergone significant changes in its layout and facilities. Several areas were relocated and replaced, while new facilities, such as hotel meals, takeaway foods, and a coffee bar, were introduced.
In the past, the cafe had a kitchen and serving area in the northeast corner, while the toilets were in the southwest corner. In the centre of the cafe, there were tables and chairs, and the staff dining rooms were on the north side of the cafe, while bins were on the west side of the cafe.
At present, the serving area has been replaced with hot meals, while staff dining rooms have been replaced with takeaway food and a coffee bar. The bins have been replaced with recycling bins and a salad bar has been installed. A barbecue and an outdoor seating have been installed on the south side of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student has adequately addressed the task by outlining the key changes shown in the two college cafe plans. A clear overview is provided, noting the general shift in layout and the introduction of new facilities. The student accurately highlights the replacement of staff dining rooms with takeaway food and a coffee bar, as well as the addition of the outdoor seating and barbecue area. However, there are some minor spatial misreadings in the body paragraphs; for example, the student states the kitchen was in the northeast corner and bins on the west, whereas the visual data shows the kitchen in the upper-left (northwest) and the bin on the east. Despite these minor inaccuracies, all main features are reported and compared, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a clear overall arrangement with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs comparing the past and present layouts. Information is logically sequenced, moving from general changes to specific spatial details. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In the past', and 'At present' are used effectively to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the analysis, and referencing is generally clear throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task, incorporating terms like 'relocated', 'replaced', 'facilities', and 'installation'. There are some vocabulary slips, such as referring to 'hot meals' as 'hotel meals', which slightly detracts from precision. However, less common items are attempted with reasonable success, and spelling and word choices are generally clear enough not to impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures appropriately, such as 'has been replaced with' and 'has been installed'. Grammatical control is fairly consistent, and punctuation is handled well. While there are a few minor errors, such as the incorrect article usage in 'an outdoor seating' (outdoor seating is uncountable), the majority of sentences are clear and do not impede communication.
