Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to summarize the changes shown in the college café plans, but it falls short in several areas. While it mentions key modifications such as the replacement of the staff dining rooms with a takeaway food and coffee bar, and the addition of a salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating, the overall reporting lacks clarity and precision. The description of features is sometimes confused, referring to changes as changes in 'nomenclature' rather than physical structural transformations. Furthermore, some details are vague or slightly inaccurate, such as stating that 'no changes we modified' below the coffee bar, overlooking the recycling bins, toilets, and the new outdoor areas. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed, leading to a band score of 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The essay is divided into short paragraphs, but the logical organization and progression are weak. Cohesive devices are either misused or absent, resulting in choppy and disjointed sentences. For instance, phrases like 'where as in past the has kitchen has...' and 'to the end of the present' impede the flow of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas lacks clear structural progression from the overview to the specific spatial changes. Reference words are occasionally unclear or incorrectly used, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial comparisons between the past and present plans. Therefore, a band score of 4.5 is assigned.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very basic and contains numerous spelling and word-choice errors. Examples of misspellings and awkward phrasing include 'inforfmation', 'apperance', 'Thr college', 'deimks avalaible', 'coffe bar', and 'reclycle bin'. The student relies heavily on repetitive and imprecise terminology, such as repeatedly using the word 'nomenclature' instead of terms relating to physical spaces or functions. While the writer attempts some topic-specific vocabulary related to the task (e.g., 'cafe', 'kitchen', 'take away food', 'salad bar'), the high density of lexical errors and limited range restrict the score to a band 4.5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text contains frequent structural errors, awkward phrasing, and issues with tense and verb agreement, such as 'The above images gives inforfmation', 'Thr college cafe has redesigned respectively', and 'the hot meals were replaced in the place of serving area'. Complex sentence structures are attempted, but they are frequently faulty and obscure the intended meaning. Punctuation and basic sentence boundaries are also handled inconsistently, leading to frequent difficulty for the reader. This level of accuracy and range corresponds to a band score of 4.0.
