The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The diagram compares the infrastructure of a cafe in modern day and before renovating.
Overall, the majority of renovation was noticed outside the cafe which included several sections which were not existed in the cafetaria before renovation. Most of the insider segments of the cafe did not undergo much of a renovation but the staff dining rooms were transformed into 2 different sections.
Cafe before redesigning, the layout of the cafetaria was simple without any complications. The north-western section had a kitchen with a serving area which included all the food and beverages. The main centre section had 3 rooms including 2 staff dining rooms and a toilet in the south-eastern section followed by a dustbin on the extreme western side of the entrance.
In present day, The cafe is widely expanded by introducing a salad bar in the area of tables and chairs. Take away food area and coffee bar replaced the stafff dining area. Outside of the cafe, barbeque was introduced with plenty of outdoor seating. Kitchen was almost similar to the one before renovating. at last, bin is also in the same place but it is upgraded into recycling bin.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses the task by comparing the two plans of the college cafe before and after the redesign. The student covers the main features, such as the changes in the kitchen area, the conversion of staff dining rooms into a take away food section and coffee bar, the addition of a salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue area. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting both internal and external modifications. However, there are minor inaccuracies in spatial details, such as stating that the bin is on the extreme western side of the entrance when it is actually on the eastern side, and claiming the cafe is 'widely expanded' by introducing a salad bar in the seating area. Overall, all key parts of the prompt are covered, earning a solid Band 6.5.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically into four paragraphs, starting with an introduction, followed by an overview, a description of the past layout, and finally the current layout. Cohesive devices are used to link ideas, such as 'Overall', 'In present day', and 'at last'. However, referencing and transitions are at times slightly mechanical or awkward, such as 'Cafe before redesigning' and 'In present day, The cafe is widely expanded'. Paragraphing is adequate and helps guide the reader through the comparison, ensuring a clear overall progression that fits the Band 6 descriptor well.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, attempting less common items such as 'infrastructure', 'renovation', 'cafetaria', and 'recycled bin'. However, there are several word-choice and collocation errors, such as 'before renovating' instead of 'before renovation', 'which were not existed' instead of 'which did not exist', and 'stafff' (spelling error). The repetition of terms like 'renovation' also limits flexibility. Because these errors do not impede communication, the lexical resource is characteristic of Band 6.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as relative clauses ('which included several sections which were not existed'). There are noticeable grammatical errors throughout, including tense inconsistencies and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'Cafe before redesigning, the layout of the cafetaria was simple', 'Kitchen was almost similar to the one before renovating'). Punctuation slips also occur, such as lowercase letters at the beginning of sentences ('at last, bin is...'). While these errors occasionally cause the reader to pause, they do not severely impede understanding, placing the writing firmly at Band 6.
