Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student successfully addresses the prompt by summarising the main changes to the college cafe from the provided plans. Key transformations, such as the replacement of staff dining rooms with a take-away food centre and a coffee bar, the addition of a salad bar, and the introduction of an outdoor seating and barbecue area, are accurately reported. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the expansion of facilities and outdoor space utilisation. However, minor details like table counts in the final sentence are slightly inaccurate compared to the visual data (which shows four rectangular tables rather than three horizontal and two vertical ones). Despite this minor misread, the response covers all parts of the task well, earning a Band 7.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The response opens with an introductory sentence, followed by an overview paragraph, and then detailed body paragraphs describing specific spatial changes. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'In addition', 'Firstly', and 'Moreover' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is handled reasonably well, though combining the body sentences into more distinct paragraphs could enhance structural flow. Referencing is generally clear, connecting previous layouts to current ones effectively. This aligns well with the Band 7.0 descriptors for logical organisation and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'interior structure', 'utilized', 'tranformed', and 'conversion'. There are some noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'strucuture' instead of 'structure', 'redisgned' instead of 'redesigned', and 'infront' instead of 'in front'. Less common lexical items are attempted ('recycling bin', 'take away food centre'), but inaccuracies in spelling and slight awkwardness in phrasing prevent a higher score. Overall, the vocabulary is adequate to convey the intended meaning, fitting the Band 6.0 descriptor.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and participial phrases (e.g., 'meant for all food and drink items', 'situated to its opposite end'). However, there are frequent punctuation and spacing errors throughout the text, such as missing spaces after commas (e.g., 'Overall, the', 'Firstly, the', 'Moreover, the') and missing articles ('on west', 'with a number of outdoor seating'). While these errors do not severely impede communication, they persist across sentences, preventing the response from reaching Band 7.0. Control of grammar is sufficient for a Band 6.0.
