Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response attempts to summarise the main features of the cafe before and after the redesign, noting changes such as the addition of hot meals, a salad bar, and outdoor seating. However, the student struggles to maintain a clear, structured overview, and several statements are repetitive or inaccurate, such as claiming the bin and toilets stayed in the same place while ignoring key structural shifts. The information is presented in a fragmented manner rather than a cohesive report. Because the description contains significant gaps, repetition, and a lack of clear comparison, it falls under Band 5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response lacks a clear logical progression and paragraphing is poorly handled, with multiple thoughts crammed together or broken up by severe spelling and punctuation errors. While the writer attempts to use chronological transitions such as 'In the bignning' and 'after that', these cohesive devices are mechanical and repetitive. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the spatial comparison between the two plans. Overall organisation is weak, leading to a Band 4.5 descriptor profile, rounded to 5.0.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

The vocabulary used is very basic and repetitive, with frequent misspellings and word-choice errors that impede communication. Examples include 'bignning' instead of beginning, 'collage' instead of college, and 'hot miles' instead of hot meals. The student attempts some topic-specific terms like 'salad bar' and 'barbecue', but the overall lexical range is limited and inadequate for a standard academic task, demonstrating a performance characteristic of Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

The response contains a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex constructions are frequently faulty and ungrammatical, such as 'after the kitchen was on changed they are in the same way' and 'after we can the same place'. Punctuation is largely neglected, and basic grammatical errors occur in almost every sentence, straining the reader and aligning with Band 4 descriptors.
