Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The candidate successfully covers all the main features of the two diagrams, comparing the layout of the college cafe before its redesign with its current state. An overview is provided, highlighting key modifications such as the addition of modernised facilities (coffee bar, salad bar, barbecue area) and the expansion of seating space. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in spatial referencing compared to the visual data; for example, the student states that the kitchen occupied the 'north-eastern pasture' when it was actually in the upper-left (north-west) section, and places a bin on the 'west border' rather than the eastern wall. Nevertheless, the overall response adequately reports the transformation, fulfilling the requirements of Task 1 well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is organised into logical paragraphs, starting with an introduction and overview, followed by separate paragraphs for the past layout and the current layout. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Notably' are used to structure the text, though some transitions feel a bit mechanical or repetitive (e.g., starting consecutive sentences with 'Moreover'). Referencing is generally clear, and paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate distinct temporal periods of the cafe, ensuring a coherent overall arrangement throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a process or map comparison task, employing terms like 'transformation', 'redeveloped', 'modernised facilities', and 'demolishing'. However, there are several spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'illustrate' instead of 'illustrates', 'Notabely', 'sitting facilities', 'consructed', 'bareque', and 'buil'. These lexical errors and awkward collocations prevent the score from reaching a higher band, although communication is not severely impeded.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms with varying success. While some complex structures are used correctly (e.g., 'a hot meals area has been built, by demolishing a serving area'), there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward phrasings, such as 'The given diagram illustrate' (subject-verb agreement), 'Cafe before redesigning, a kitchen occupied' (preposition and structure error), and 'thestaff dining rooms' (spacing error). The majority of sentences contain minor slips or awkward phrasing, which places this performance firmly in Band 5.5.
