The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Student answer (Band 4.0)

The provided plans illustrates that, the college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.

Overall, you can see that the cafe changes alot. Before redesign cafe has a diffrent portions. There is a seating portion and staff dining rooms and kithen and toilets and a bin. Moreover, today cafe looks unbelieveable. In place of staff dining rooms, now there is take away food and a coffee bar. Well, the seating area does not change, that is same as before cafe. In front of the cafe there is a huge change that is outdoor seating and the barbecue area. The toilets are same as before. And if we talked about a kitchen area there is little change that, hot meals. Furthermore, today the kitchen looks great, alot of change happen.only a big change is that outdoor seating and a barbecue area and also a salad bar. Thats the change of the cafe before and after.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

The response attempts to summarize the changes shown in the two maps of the college cafe. However, the development is severely limited and repetitive. While the student identifies several key alterations such as the outdoor seating, barbecue area, and the replacement of staff dining rooms with a take away food section and coffee bar, the overall overview lacks clarity and appropriate academic tone. The writing contains repetitive phrases ('alot of change') and fails to present a fully cohesive summary of the visual data. Key features are mentioned rather than properly integrated and compared. This performance corresponds to Band 4.5, rounded to 4.0 for limited development.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

The text lacks a logical organisational structure. Instead of a standard introduction, body paragraphs, and clear overview, the response consists of a single poorly structured block of sentences. Cohesive devices are either misused or overly simplistic (e.g., 'Moreover', 'Well', 'And if we talked about', 'Furthermore'). Paragraphing is entirely neglected, as the text is clumped together improperly. Although there is a basic attempt to sequence the observations from general changes to specific details, the lack of effective paragraph breaks and mechanical transitions hinders the flow and overall readability of the response, fitting Band 4.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.0

Vocabulary usage is basic, repetitive, and heavily influenced by spoken or informal style ('alot', 'unbelieveable', 'Well'). Words are often misused or misspelled, such as 'diffrent' and 'kithen'. The student relies heavily on basic vocabulary items ('change', 'big', 'place') rather than demonstrating a flexible range suitable for an Academic Task 1 response. There is an inability to use less common lexical items accurately to describe spatial changes or transformations. Communication is occasionally strained due to these lexical limitations, placing this performance firmly in Band 4.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0

Grammatically, the response demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures. Most sentences are simple or poorly constructed attempts at complex forms containing frequent errors. Examples include 'The provided plans illustrates that, the college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now' and 'Before redesign cafe has a diffrent portions'. Punctuation is faulty, with unnecessary commas and run-on structures. Grammatical errors are frequent throughout the text, impeding readability and demonstrating weak control over basic syntactic rules, which aligns with the Band 4 descriptors.
