Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The student attempts to describe the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign, mentioning the kitchen, seating areas, toilets, and newly added features such as the outdoor seating, barbecue, and salad bar. However, there are significant inaccuracies in spatial referencing and descriptions of the layouts. For instance, the staff dining rooms were located along the north wall, but the student misplaces them in the middle, and the overall description is muddled and difficult to follow. While the response touches on the main changes, the lack of clarity and precision in reporting the visual data prevents it from achieving a higher band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response is divided into a short introduction and two body paragraphs, but the overall progression of ideas is disjointed and confusing. Cohesive devices are used awkwardly or inaccurately, such as 'According to given information' and 'After the cafe infrastructure development'. Referencing is frequently unclear, making it hard to follow which part of the plan is being described. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal cohesion within sentences and between clauses is weak, leading to an erratic flow that significantly impedes readability.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The lexical range is quite limited and heavily repetitive, with frequent word-choice errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'collage' instead of college, 'redesignation' instead of redesign, and 'specfic sities' instead of specific sites. Words are often misused, such as 'infrastructure development' and 'holding positions'. Spelling mistakes are numerous (e.g., 'cofee', 'Takle'). The vocabulary is barely adequate to communicate simple ideas about the diagram, placing it firmly in the lower bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control of grammar is very weak. There are frequent, intrusive errors in tense, subject-verb agreement, and word order, such as 'demonstrate show a collage before redesigned', 'tables and chairs are setting here', and 'Recycling bins and salad bar was adding'. Punctuation is also problematic, with run-on sentences and missing commas. These errors frequently impede communication and cause difficulty for the reader.
