Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to address the task by comparing the two plans of the college cafe. Key features such as the kitchen, outdoor seating, and the barbecue area are mentioned. However, the response lacks a clear and complete overview of the main changes, and several details are underdeveloped or inaccurate. For instance, the student states that 'staff dining rooms' were present before remodelling, but misses describing how they were replaced by a take-away food counter and coffee bar in the redesigned plan. Furthermore, the description remains too brief, failing to fully report all major spatial shifts. This aligns with a Band 5 performance.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text is divided into short paragraphs representing an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs for 'before' and 'after'. However, the progression of ideas is hindered by repetitive phrasing and a lack of smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are minimal or misused (e.g., repeating 'before remodelling' and 'after remodelling' awkwardly at the start of sentences). Paragraphing is attempted, but the structural organisation lacks overall flow and sophistication, placing it at a Band 5 level.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is generally basic and repetitive ('remodelling', 'cafe', 'students'). There are noticeable word choice and collocation issues, such as 'serving area included for all food and drinks' and 'Take away food also availabe in the cafe including a coffee bar'. Less common lexical items are attempted but often inaccurate or unnatural. Spelling errors also occur, such as 'availabe'. This corresponds to Band 5.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The student attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but control over grammar is weak. There are frequent errors in tense usage, subject-verb agreement, and articles (e.g., 'there were barbecue in the cafe', 'A kitchen is included by serving', 'staffs' instead of 'staff'). These errors occasionally cause confusion or difficulty for the reader. The grammatical range is limited, matching the descriptors for Band 5.
