Student answer (Band 5.0)

the blueprint of a college cafe above shows the before and after refurbishment look.before redesigning the cafetaria, the facilities were quite less as there was no barbeque are for the staff and the students , but know it seems to look pretty big and open area so that barbeque smoke can easily be ventelated in outdoor siting.

Moreover, an addition of takeaway food ounter and a cofe bar can be seen along with the kitchen area , in top middle of the main hall where tables and chairs are placed - to enjoy meal. A salad bar has been installed in the westen side of the cafe, that is towards the left of the kitchen area, which was not their before redesigning of the cafe.

Overall, alot of new changes have been impletemented after refurbisment of the college canteen. In top left kitch area , now hot meals would be served before that, the counter served all kind of food. The redisigned cafetarea is now more alligned spacious and offer more variety then it offered before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers the main changes shown in the two plans, noting key alterations such as the addition of the takeaway food counter, coffee bar, salad bar, outdoor seating, and barbecue area. The student attempts to report relevant spatial relationships and overall transformations. However, the summary lacks a fully cohesive overview and contains some inaccuracies or unsupported speculations regarding the barbecue smoke and ventilation. Furthermore, the description of some locations is slightly imprecise. Therefore, the task achievement is assessed at Band 5.5, as it addresses the task and presents key features, but the development and accuracy in reporting visual data remain limited and under-developed in places.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is organized into paragraphs with a discernible introduction, body, and overall conclusion. However, the progression of ideas lacks smooth transitions, and referencing is occasionally unclear (e.g., dangling modifiers and abrupt shifts between spatial details). Paragraphing is attempted, but sentences within paragraphs do not always flow logically from one to the next. Cohesive devices are minimal or mechanically applied, causing the structure to feel somewhat disjointed. Overall, the organization shows some logical sequencing but lacks clarity and smooth progression, aligning with a Band 5.0 descriptor.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary related to the prompt, such as 'blueprint', 'refurbishment', 'takeaway food counter', and 'salad bar'. However, there are numerous spelling mistakes ('cafetaria', 'barbeque', 'are', 'know', 'ventelated', 'siting', 'ounter', 'cofe', 'westen', 'their', 'impletemented', 'kitch', 'alligned') and word choice errors ('quite less', 'all kind of food'). These lexical errors and spelling inaccuracies noticeably impede communication at times and reflect a limited, basic vocabulary range with frequent slips, placing this criterion at Band 4.5, rounded to 5.0 based on positive aspects of topic attempt.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is weak throughout. There are frequent punctuation errors, missing commas, missing articles, and awkward phrasing (e.g., 'before redesigning the cafetaria, the facilities were quite less', 'which was not their before redesigning of the cafe', 'now hot meals would be served before that'). The high frequency of grammatical and mechanical errors causes noticeable difficulty for the reader and prevents the response from reaching higher bands. Thus, a band score of 4.5 is appropriate, reflecting frequent errors that impact readability.
