Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response fails to meet the minimum word count of 150 words, as it contains only 112 words, which severely impacts Task Achievement. Furthermore, while the writer identifies a few key changes such as the outdoor seating, takeaway food, coffee bar, salad bar, and barbecue area, the overview is extremely basic and lacks a comprehensive summary of the overall transformation. Several important features from the original plan, such as the kitchen remaining unchanged and the replacement of staff dining rooms, are either glossed over or omitted. Because the ideas are underdeveloped and the word count is significantly under the limit, this response falls into the lower-middle bands.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The text suffers from poor paragraphing and organizational structure. It begins with a run-on sentence and breaks the text into only three very short paragraphs, lacking a cohesive overall structure. While there are basic cohesive devices used, such as 'looking at the diagram in more details' and 'the other physical structure', referencing is sometimes weak, and the flow between ideas feels abrupt. Paragraphing is not used effectively to group related information about the café's layout changes, resulting in a disjointed reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with several spelling errors ('salaad', 'icnlude', 'sitting' instead of 'seating'). The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'introduction', 'facilitate', and 'physical structure', but these are often misused or imprecise. The range of vocabulary is limited and minimally adequate for describing the changes in the diagrams, but lexical control is weak throughout the text.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
Grammatically, the response shows a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple or faulty complex sentences. There are notable grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('several new areas has been introduced') and missing capitalization and punctuation at the beginning and within sentences ('it is clear', 'looking at the diagram in more details , we can see'). While some simple sentences are accurate, the frequency of basic errors impacts readability and demonstrates poor control over grammatical structures.
