Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The student attempts to describe the changes shown in the two maps of the college canteen, noting key additions such as the salad bar, coffee bar, and outdoor seating area. However, the response falls short of a higher band because the tone is highly subjective and evaluative rather than objective and analytical (e.g., describing the new setup as "too strong and beautiful" or the barbecue section as making "the beauty of a cafe twice"). Furthermore, the overview lacks precision and the description contains some inaccurate characterizations of the visual data. To improve, the student must maintain a neutral, formal academic tone and focus on reporting the principal spatial changes and structural transformations clearly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The text suffers significantly from a lack of proper paragraphing, as it is presented as a single dense block of text instead of distinct, logically organized paragraphs (such as an introduction, overview, and body paragraphs). Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or misused, and referencing is often unclear (e.g., shifting abruptly between details without clear spatial links). The flow of information is disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow a logical progression from the old plan to the redesigned layout. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to structure the response into clear paragraphs and use appropriate cohesive links to guide the reader through the comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is quite basic, repetitive, and occasionally unnatural or inappropriate for an academic task (e.g., "too strong and beautiful", "meat lovers", "beauty of a cafe twice"). There are also lexical inaccuracies, such as referring to "bakers" instead of bakery items or baking equipment. While the student attempts some less common vocabulary items like "transformation" and "recycling bin", word choice and collocations are frequently flawed. To improve, the student should expand their range of descriptive vocabulary relating to architectural changes, spatial adjustments, and trends, while avoiding informal or emotional expressions.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The student demonstrates a limited range of grammatical structures, relying heavily on simple sentences alongside some faulty attempts at complex forms. There are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., "The two maps represents", "The new setup also have"), missing articles, and awkward phrasing. Punctuation is also problematic, with spacing errors following commas and periods (e.g., "canteen. The old"). While meaning is generally recoverable despite these errors, the high frequency of basic mistakes prevents the response from reaching a higher band. A greater focus on sentence variety, accurate verb forms, and punctuation is essential.
