Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plans illustrate the changes made to a college café following its redesign.
Overall, the café has been considerably modernized, with several new facilities and seating areas added. The main changes include the introduction of an outdoor seating area, a new service counter and additional tables, while some of the original furniture has been rearranged or removed. Before the redesign, the café had a relatively simple layout. There was a service counter along the northern wall, while tables and chairs occupied most of the central and southern areas. A small seating area was also located near the entrance. The café had a limited number of facilities and mainly consisted of indoor seating. Following the redevelopment, the layout has become more varied and spacious. The original service counter has been replaced or repositioned, and a new counter has been added to improve the serving area. More seating has also been provided, including additional tables in the main indoor area. One of the most noticeable changes is the creation of an outdoor seating area, which provides students with another place to eat and relax. In addition, some of the previous tables and chairs have been removed or moved to different positions. Overall, the redesigned café makes better use of the available space and provides students with more facilities and seating options than before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing a clear overview of the main changes and selecting relevant features from the plans, such as the new outdoor seating area, counter modifications, and facility updates. The information is generally accurate and grounded in the visual data. However, some descriptions remain a bit general rather than pointing out specific spatial shifts (for instance, mentioning that 'some of the previous tables and chairs have been removed or moved' without specifying the exact replacement by take away food or coffee bars in the northern section). To reach a higher band, the response could integrate more precise comparative details regarding specific structural transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is logically organized with a clear overall progression from an introduction and overview into specific details about the layout before and after the redesign. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overall summary, previous layout, current layout, and concluding thoughts. Cohesive devices are used adequately (e.g., 'Before the redesign', 'Following the redevelopment', 'In addition'), though referencing and transitions could be slightly smoother and less repetitive to achieve a higher score. Overall, the arrangement is coherent and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for an academic task 1 response, using appropriate terms such as 'modernized', 'redevelopment', 'repositioned', and 'spatial layout'. While there are successful attempts at less common vocabulary ('varied and spacious', 'noticeable changes'), the vocabulary is occasionally repetitive, relying frequently on standard descriptors like 'tables and chairs', 'seating area', and 'service counter'. Spelling and word choice are accurate and do not impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The response exhibits a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses effectively (e.g., 'while tables and chairs occupied most of the central and southern areas' and 'which provides students with another place to eat and relax'). Grammatical control is generally strong with frequent error-free sentences, and punctuation is handled well throughout. Errors are very rare, demonstrating a solid command of grammar appropriate for a Band 7 level.
