The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The plans illustrate the original layout of a college cafe with its structure after being redesigned.
Overall, the plan has undergone major change, notably the central area where they changed the function of the two small rooms and added a bar. Furthermore, they've created an outdoor place with some doors to link the outside with the inside part. Little transformation in the serving area happened.
Looking at the indoor serving area, which was made for all food and drink, transformed into a place for hot meals. Furthermore, they changed the principal function of staff dining rooms and made a coffee bar and takeaway food; instead, a salad bar has been added on the west side of the main hall, and the small bin became bigger on the right side.
They created a big outdoor seating area and set some chairs and tables for families and friends, alongside a barbecue so they can enjoy eating there. Two doors had been added to link the main hall with outside seating.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by comparing the original layout of the college cafe with the current one. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting major structural changes such as the addition of the outdoor seating and the reconfiguration of the central rooms. Key features are reported, including the conversion of staff dining rooms into a coffee bar and takeaway area, the addition of a salad bar, and the introduction of outdoor seating with a barbecue. While some minor details are omitted, the main trends and spatial alterations are clearly articulated, satisfying the requirements for a Band 6.5 to 7.0 level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs detailing specific indoor and outdoor changes. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Furthermore', and 'Looking at' are used to guide the reader through the comparison, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical or repetitive ('Furthermore'). Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different areas of the cafe. Referencing is generally clear, though occasional links between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher band score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task, attempting some less common collocations and descriptive terms such as 'reconfigured', 'transformation', and 'outdoor seating'. However, there are some awkward lexical choices and phrasing, such as 'Little transformation in the serving area happened' and 'the small bin became bigger'. Spelling is generally accurate, but the range of vocabulary remains somewhat limited and repetitive in places, restricting the score to a solid Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as relative clauses ('which was made for all food and drink') and participial phrases. There are some grammatical errors and awkward phrasing, including tense shifts and preposition usage (e.g., 'transformed into a place for hot meals' lacking a clear subject, and 'link the main hall with outside seating'). However, these errors do not impede communication, and the overall grammatical control aligns well with the Band 6.0 descriptors.
