Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the main features of the two maps comparing the college cafe before and after the redesign, noting key changes such as the removal of the staff dining rooms to make way for a takeaway food section and coffee bar, the addition of outdoor seating, a barbecue, and a salad bar. However, the development is limited and lacks precise detail in several areas. For instance, the description contains inaccuracies regarding the layout, such as stating that recycling bins were 'added to bin' or mislocating the toilets. Furthermore, the overview is very basic. This performance aligns with Band 5.0.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response is divided into brief paragraphs, but the overall organization lacks a clear, logical progression. Cohesive devices are minimal, repetitive, and often awkward, such as the frequent repetition of 'After the cafe redesigned' or 'Before the cafe redesigned'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, and punctuation errors disrupt the flow. While there is a rudimentary attempt to structure the comparison between past and present, the mechanical and faulty use of cohesion places this response in Band 5.0.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used is very basic, repetitive, and heavily reliant on words lifted directly from the prompt and visual data (e.g., 'cafe', 'redesigned', 'kitchen', 'tables and chairs'). There are numerous word-formation and choice errors, such as 'redesg, ned', 'chnges', 'barby', 'outer place', and 'sitting' instead of 'seating'. These frequent errors and the limited range of vocabulary restrict the lexical score to Band 4.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is extremely limited, consisting mostly of simple sentences ('There was kitchen in the western side', 'Barbecue is added'). Attempts at more complex structures are consistently faulty, marred by missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and persistent agreement errors (e.g., 'the two staff dining rooms is barby food', 'a lot of outdoor sitting we're added'). Punctuation and capitalization are also poorly controlled throughout. This corresponds to a Band 4.0 level.
