The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
This figure displays a before and after look of a college cafe which has been redesigned.
Overall, a lot of changes have been made in the cafe. Few things are same in the redesigned cafe but most of the things have been replaced with the new things and a lot more sections have been build which weren't present earlier.
Inside the cafe, we can see significant updates. Serving area has been replaced by hot meals section. A new take away food compartment is made in place of the staff dining rooms with a coffee bar right beside it. Furthermore, a salad bar has also been built inside the cafe which was not present earlier and a recyle bin size has also been increased. However, Toilets, kitchen and seating section is same as it was earlier.
Outside the cafe, there are two main changes in the redesigned cafe. First, a barbecue section has been added, secondly, an outdoor seating has been constructed. Apart from it there aren,t any changes outside the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by identifying the main features and making clear comparisons between the two plans. You clearly point out the key transformations, such as the replacement of the serving area with hot meals, the conversion of staff dining rooms into a take-away section and coffee bar, and the addition of a salad bar, barbecue area, and outdoor seating. An overview is present, summarising the overall extent of the changes. To reach a higher level, the description could be further developed by incorporating specific spatial details or proportional comparisons, rather than relying on somewhat broad statements about what was added or kept.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
Your response demonstrates a clear logical organization and progression throughout. The structure is well-divided into a natural introduction, an overall summary paragraph, an analysis of indoor changes, and a final paragraph detailing outdoor alterations. Cohesive devices are used reasonably well, such as "Overall", "Furthermore", and "However", which help guide the reader smoothly from one point to the next. To achieve an even higher band, you could ensure that referencing and sentence transitions are slightly more varied and sophisticated, avoiding repetitive structural openings like "Inside the cafe" and "Outside the cafe".
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for describing a map transformation, incorporating terms like "redesigned", "compartment", and "alterations". However, the vocabulary is at times repetitive and lacks precision, relying on basic phrases like "a lot of changes", "new things", and "same as it was earlier". There are also minor lexical lapses, such as writing "recyle bin size has also been increased" instead of noting the replacement with recycling bins. To improve your lexical score, you should incorporate a wider variety of less common academic vocabulary and more precise collocations related to spatial changes.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully utilizing structures such as "a salad bar has also been built inside the cafe which was not present earlier". However, there are noticeable grammatical errors and awkward phrasings throughout the text, including article omissions ("Serving area has been replaced", "bin size"), non-standard punctuation ("aren,t"), and phrasing issues like "Few things are same" instead of "Few things are the same". To reach higher bands, you need to demonstrate greater control over complex sentence structures and eliminate frequent minor grammatical slips.
