Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, and it makes relevant comparisons between the two layouts. An overview is provided at the beginning, noting that new facilities like outdoor seating, a barbecue, a salad bar, and a coffee bar were added. However, some parts of the response are slightly under-developed or lack full clarity regarding spatial relationships, such as describing the exact relocation of the staff dining rooms into take-away and coffee sections. It covers the requirements adequately for this level, moving slightly beyond a basic overview to highlight specific spatial changes, though deeper extension of the comparisons would be needed to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically. The response starts with an introduction and a brief overview, followed by body paragraphs moving through different sections of the cafe (center, northwest, east, and west). However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty. Referencing and transitional phrases are occasionally awkward, such as starting sentences abruptly with positional markers like 'In the east, there was a bin and present it develop to recycling bins'. Paragraphing is used, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother and more clearly linked to achieve a higher score.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms relevant to architectural changes and cafe layouts, such as 'redesign', 'reconstruction', 'facilities', and 'recyling bins'. There are, however, noticeable word choice and word formation errors, such as 'collage' instead of 'college', 'dafe' instead of 'cafe', 'present it develop' instead of 'presently it has developed', and spelling mistakes like 'kicthen'. Less common lexical items are attempted, but inaccuracies in word form and collocation occasionally emerge, which places the vocabulary use securely within this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are frequent basic errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'The diagrams compares' instead of 'compare', 'tables and chairs remain same' instead of 'remain the same', and 'Toilets remains' instead of 'remain'. Additionally, article usage is sometimes missing or incorrect ('in north west kicthen is not changed too'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur regularly throughout the text, preventing the response from achieving a higher score.
