Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially. While the student attempts to compare the college café before and after its redesign, the information is presented with noticeable omissions and a lack of a clear overall overview. The introductory sentences ("The stipulated diagram depict the information regarding the map college cafe...") fail to outline the main trends or general changes effectively. Furthermore, some details are inaccurately or confusingly reported, such as stating that staff dining rooms were removed and developed into a take-away food area and coffee bar when the plan shows these replaced the north-wall rooms. Ideas remain limited and under-developed, meaning the key features of the two diagrams are not fully captured.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation, but the progression of information lacks clarity. The response is divided into paragraphs, which is a positive feature, but the cohesive devices used are often mechanical, repetitive, or awkward (e.g., "To commence wih,", "With regards to,", "Moving ahead,"). Referencing is sometimes unclear, and the overall flow between sentences and paragraphs is disjointed. While the writer attempts to guide the reader through the spatial changes from left to right, the abrupt transitions prevent a smooth logical progression throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and typos throughout the response, such as "depict" instead of "depicts", "wih" instead of "with", and "redesigning" versus "redesigned". The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the map features, but inaccuracies in word form and collocation occasionally cause difficulty for the reader and prevent precise reporting of the visual data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of grammatical structures. Simple sentences dominate, and attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty or ungrammatical, such as "the structure of cafe before redesign there was a kitchen area..." which results in run-on phrasing and missing prepositional links. There are frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement (e.g., "diagram depict"), and article usage. These frequent grammatical errors cause some difficulty for the reader, though the core meaning can still be deciphered with effort.
