The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The plans illustrate the layouts of a college cafe before and after it was revamped.
Overall, although the indoor dining area remained mostly unchanged, the rooms where staff could eat were replaced by other facilities. The serving area was divided into two different parts, and an open-air terrace was added.
In the northern part of the cafe, there used to be a single serving area for all types of food and drink. After the redesign, it was split into two facilities: an area for serving hot meals to the south of the kitchen, and a salad bar in the western part of the dining room. In addition, two rooms reserved for staff were replaced by a coffee bar and an area for customers to order takeaway, whereas the original bin was replaced by several recycling bins.
One of the most noticeable changes was the addition of an outdoor terrace for dining, which includes five tables for customers. An area for barbecue was also built outside the cafe's main building.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response covers all key features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, presenting a clear overview of the main changes. You successfully note that the staff dining rooms were removed, the serving layout was split, and an outdoor terrace was added. The information is accurately reported, fulfilling the requirements for selecting and reporting main features and making comparisons. To reach higher bands, you could provide slightly more detailed comparisons regarding the exact spatial layout or changes to the central dining area, ensuring that every minor feature, such as the relocated toilets or the kitchen's permanence, is integrated into a fully developed discussion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
Your text demonstrates a clear logical organisation and progression throughout. The introductory paragraph sets the context, the overview highlights the main shifts effectively, and the body paragraphs group related changes logically (such as indoor modifications followed by outdoor additions). Cohesive devices like 'Overall', 'After the redesign', 'In addition', and 'whereas' are used appropriately to guide the reader through the comparison. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and effectively. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, you could ensure even smoother transitions between the interior changes and exterior developments to make the text flow with absolute seamlessness.
Lexical Resource: Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary with good flexibility and precision, using appropriate terms such as 'layouts', 'revamped', 'facilities', and 'redesign'. Less common lexical items and collocations are attempted successfully, such as 'outdoor terrace' and 'recycling bins'. Word choice is generally accurate, allowing the message to be communicated clearly. Occasional minor slips or slightly basic phrasing prevent this from reaching a higher band. To improve further, incorporate more sophisticated paraphrasing for spatial descriptions and precise academic vocabulary regarding structural alterations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.5
You display a good variety of complex sentence structures, incorporating subordinate clauses and participle phrases effectively (e.g., 'although the indoor dining area remained mostly unchanged, the rooms where staff could eat were replaced'). There are frequent error-free sentences, and your control over grammar, verb tenses, and punctuation is strong throughout. Minor errors persist occasionally, but they do not impede communication. Maintaining this high standard of grammatical control while introducing an even wider variety of advanced syntactic structures will help sustain this solid performance.
