Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign, and includes relevant comparisons. For instance, the writer correctly notes that the kitchen remains in the upper-left corner while the serving area has been transformed into a hot meals section, and highlights the addition of the outdoor seating and barbecue. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack complete clarity, such as the descriptions of the replaced staff rooms and the new takeaway and coffee bar sections. Overall, the information presented is generally accurate according to the visual data, though the level of development varies across different areas of the plan.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical progression, moving from an introduction to an overview, followed by details of the cafe before and after the redesign. Paragraphing is attempted, though paragraph divisions are sometimes unconventional or missing, particularly in the longer descriptive sections. Cohesive devices are used, but they are occasionally mechanical or repetitive, such as the frequent reliance on phrases like 'before redesign', 'after redesign', and 'after entering the cafe'. Referencing is also somewhat faulty at times, making it occasionally challenging to follow the exact spatial relationships between different features on the map.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to communicate basic features of the maps, such as 'kitchen', 'tables and chairs', 'toilets', and 'outdoor seating'. However, the range is limited, and there are frequent word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'resigning' instead of 'redesigning', 'cornor' instead of 'corner', 'bear by' instead of 'near by', 'replcaed', 'tow' instead of 'two', and 'erving' instead of 'serving'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score because attempts at less common or precise vocabulary often lead to non-standard collocations or misspelled words.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in verb tenses and agreement, such as 'the cafe is look like' and 'there are several of features were added'. Punctuation is also weak, with missing capital letters at the beginning of sentences and erratic use of commas and periods. Articles and prepositions inside grammatical patterns are frequently misused, as seen in phrases like 'on the straight forwaerd' and 'on the west side of cornor area'. These persistent errors reflect a limited control of grammatical structures at this level.
