Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign, such as the addition of the outdoor seating, barbecue, and salad bar. However, some aspects are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies. For instance, the student states that the kitchen and toilets remained in the same position and 'both opposite of each other', which is not entirely accurate geographically according to the plan, as the toilets are in the bottom-right corner and the kitchen is in the upper-left. Additionally, while comparisons are made regarding the recycling bins and the serving area, the overview could be extended more clearly to capture the overall spatial transformation.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, separating the introduction, overview, and body details. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'To commence with', and 'In addition to that'. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty due to punctuation and phrasing issues, such as comma splices ('barbecue, folllowed by') and slightly disjointed transitions between sentences. Referencing and logical progression are present, but smoother linking between the indoor and outdoor modifications would elevate the organizational flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
An adequate range of vocabulary is used for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to architectural changes and layout features, such as 'evolution', 'redeveloped', 'reconstructed', and 'recycling waste containers'. However, there are some noticeable word choice inaccuracies and spelling errors that prevent a higher band, such as 'portay' instead of portray, 'premisis' instead of premises, and 'boundry' instead of boundary. Furthermore, collocation could be more precise, such as using 'outdoor seating area' rather than 'outdoor seating is developed'.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing passive structures like 'has been introduced' and subordinate clauses. However, there are frequent errors in grammar and punctuation that persist throughout the text. These include punctuation errors (run-on sentences and comma splices like 'barbecue, folllowed by a salad bar', 'coffee bar, besides it there is'), missing articles ('an outdoor seating is developed'), and prepositional or structural awkwardness ('infront of the restroom multiple recycling waste containers are kept before there was single bin constituted'). These errors require some effort from the reader but rarely completely impede communication.
