Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response addresses the task partially by identifying several key changes between the two plans of the college cafe, such as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and barbecue area, alongside elements that remained unchanged like the toilets and kitchen. However, the development of ideas is limited, and the overview is simplistic. Certain features are mislocated in the text, for instance, placing the staff dining rooms at the right-side center in the original plan rather than along the top wall. To move to a higher band, the response needs a clearer, more fully developed overall summary of the main trends and greater accuracy in reporting spatial relationships without minor omissions or confusions.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation present in the structure, beginning with an introductory sentence and attempting to contrast the old and new designs using basic sequencing words like 'firstly' and 'now'. However, there is no clear overall progression due to a lack of proper paragraphing and mechanical cohesive devices. Referencing is frequently unclear, and sentences run together without adequate punctuation or logical transitions. To improve, the writer should group related information into distinct, logical paragraphs and use a wider variety of cohesive devices more accurately to guide the reader smoothly through the comparisons.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common terms related to the visual data, such as 'redesigned', 'recycling bins', and 'barbecue', but these are accompanied by noticeable spelling errors like 'chane', 'fronf', 'kichen', 'avilable', 'entery', 'bside', 'toliet', 'seaction', 'foof', 'coffe', and 'out side'. These lexical inadequacies and frequent spelling mistakes cause some difficulty for the reader. Achieving a higher band requires expanding the vocabulary range, using precise terms for describing spatial changes, and ensuring accurate spelling throughout the response.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The text displays a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent errors in verb forms, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions. Examples of these frequent errors include 'The Map show', 'kitchen, toilets and recycling bins place can not chane', 'a tables and chairs are avilable', and 'location is can no change'. Attempts at more complex structures are virtually absent, and punctuation is largely neglected, with run-on sentences and missing capitalisation. These persistent errors reduce readability and signify the need for a stronger command of basic sentence patterns, verb tenses, and grammatical accuracy.
