The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the layout of a college cafe, both the old and the redesigned versions.
Overall, the new layout includes an outdoor seating with barbecue facility, and there are some internal changes as well like replacing staff dining rooms facility with takeaway food and coffee bar.
Before redesigning, cafe had its kitchen and serving area in the same location or we can say in a same boundary. And there is no salad bar as well. Staff dining rooms had circular seating with round tables. Tiolets were on the south eastren side opposite to bin which is also situated in the east side wall.
After modification, seating capacity had increased massively by expanding the outer space with five additional tables. Moreover, now people can also take benefit from the barbecue facility, which was lacking in the previous layout. Several activities remain at the original place like kitchen, hot meals and toilets, but the noticable factor was the recycling bins which was replaced by normal bins. Saladbar is also a key addition in the new plan of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign and making relevant comparisons. For instance, you correctly noted the addition of the outdoor seating area and barbecue, as well as internal modifications like the replacement of staff dining rooms. However, some parts of your response are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies, such as stating that seating capacity 'increased massively by expanding the outer space with five additional tables,' which is a somewhat limited interpretation of the visual data. To reach a higher band, you should ensure that all major spatial changes and features are fully extended and supported with precise details without relying on conversational phrasing like 'or we can say in a same boundary.'
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding overview. You make use of basic cohesive devices such as 'Overall,' 'Before redesigning,' and 'After modification' to guide the reader through the spatial changes. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, particularly in how sentences are linked within paragraphs. For example, referencing and transitional flow could be smoother between the descriptions of the internal and external changes. To achieve a higher level of coherence and cohesion, you need to employ a wider range of cohesive devices more flexibly and ensure that every paragraph progresses logically from one point to the next without abrupt shifts.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to successfully describe the maps using appropriate terms such as 'layout,' 'redesigned,' and 'modification.' You attempt less common vocabulary items like 'massive' and 'recycling bins,' though there are some noticeable word choice and spelling errors that slightly impact precision, such as 'Tiolets' and 'south eastren.' Additionally, some phrases are slightly informal or awkward for an academic context, such as 'take benefit from.' To reach a higher band, you need to demonstrate greater control over less common lexical items, improve your spelling accuracy, and adopt a more formal, academic tone throughout your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, successfully using structures like relative clauses ('which was lacking in the previous layout') and prepositional phrases. There are, however, some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as missing articles ('Before redesigning, cafe had...') and minor prepositional inaccuracies ('on the south eastren side opposite to bin'). While these errors do not impede communication and the meaning remains clear, they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. To improve your grammatical range and accuracy, focus on consistent article usage, accurate prepositions of place, and eliminating minor slip-ups in sentence construction.
