Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by identifying the main features and changes between the two plans, successfully reaching the word count requirement. Key transformations are noted, such as the replacement of staff dining rooms with a take-away food corner and coffee bar, and the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue area. However, some aspects are under-developed or described with slight inaccuracies, such as the location of the salad bar which is noted as 'middle west side' when it spans the western wall. The overview mentions general changes well, but the selection of features could be slightly more structured and balanced to reach a higher band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes, and a concluding remark. Cohesive devices and referencing are used, such as 'Overall', 'Scrutinising deeper', and 'Digging deeper', though some of these transitional phrases feel a bit mechanical or repetitive in style. Paragraphing is employed to separate different sections of the cafe, but the logical progression between paragraphs could be smoother and more integrated to avoid a disjointed reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate the main changes effectively. There are some successful attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'delineated', 'transformation', and 'demolished'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, including 'aafter', 'itemss', 'ocuupied', and 'Earkier', alongside slightly awkward phrasing like 'prima facie glance'. These errors do not impede communication, but they prevent the vocabulary score from reaching a higher level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms. There are examples of correct grammatical structures, but the text also contains several grammatical errors involving articles, prepositions, and pluralisation, such as 'new take away food corner and coffee bar is added' (agreement), 'location of tables and chairs, kitchen and toilet is unchanged', and missing articles before singular nouns like 'cafe' and 'barbecue place'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors are present, they are not frequent enough to impede communication.
