Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main changes and features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, successfully meeting the requirements for a balanced summary. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, noting that while the outer structure remains unchanged, several new food counters and doors were added. However, some areas of the response are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in reporting specific details, such as the exact transformation of the staff dining rooms into a take away food section and coffee bar. While key comparisons are made regarding additions like the salad bar, outdoor seating, and barbecue area, a clearer and more fully extended discussion of all spatial shifts would push this criterion further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to specific modifications and areas that remained unchanged. Paragraphing is utilized to separate different aspects of the visual data, helping to structure the response. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty due to awkward transitions and run-on sentences, such as starting sentences abruptly with phrases like 'At first' or 'adding to that'. Referencing is generally clear, but the flow between ideas could be smoother through a more varied and accurate use of cohesive devices, moving away from repetitive conjunctions to achieve a more natural organizational structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying basic concepts related to the spatial changes in the canteen. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'remodeling' and 'enhancement', but these are accompanied by lexical inaccuracies and word-choice errors, including 'Salaad' (spelling error) and phrasing like 'doors to went outside' or 'bin section is now known as recycling bin'. Word choice is sometimes repetitive, and occasional awkward collocations appear throughout the text. These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score, showing that greater precision and a wider range of appropriate collocation are needed.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to vary sentence structures. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, such as tense inconsistencies ('At first there are multiple new additions'), preposition and infinitive errors ('doors to went outside'), and missing articles or pluralization issues ('few areas still remain the same'). Punctuation is also occasionally weak, leading to run-on structures. These errors occur fairly frequently but rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical control securely within the mid-range level where control of complex structures remains inconsistent.
