The given task is the pictorial representation of two maps depicting the cafe layout before it was redesigned and the changes that have taken place to the present day.
Overall, the cafe underwent significant redevelopment, with former staff dining rooms being replaced by take away food and coffee bar area. In addition, new outdoor seating area is added along with barbecue section on one side.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. A clear overview is provided, highlighting key transformations such as the replacement of staff dining rooms with a takeaway food and coffee bar area, alongside the addition of outdoor seating and a barbecue section. However, some parts are more fully developed than others, and a few details are slightly inaccurate or confusing. For example, the student states that a salad bar is added to the northwest side, whereas the visual data shows it placed along the western wall. Similarly, the mention of the northeast side having no major changes overlooks the complete removal of the staff rooms. To reach a higher level, all comparisons and spatial references must be completely accurate and fully extended.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical organisation, moving from an introductory overview to specific details regarding the layout changes. Paragraphing is utilised to separate the introduction, body details, and overview elements, creating a readable structure. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Transitional phrases like 'To commence with' and 'On the other hand' are used somewhat rigidly, and referencing occasionally lacks precision, such as vague directional markers like 'northwest side' or 'northeast side' which do not consistently match the plan. Pronoun referencing and logical progression between sentences could be smoother to avoid abrupt shifts in focus. Enhancing the variety and subtlety of cohesive devices would elevate this aspect.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the changes made to the cafe layout with terms like 'pictorial representation', 'redevelopment', and 'relocated'. The student attempts less common vocabulary such as 'redesigned' and 'recycling bins', though there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'place for hot meals' instead of a serving counter, and a spelling slip with 'manu changes' instead of 'many changes'. While these errors do not impede communication, they reflect a limited precision in lexical control. To achieve a higher score, the writer should incorporate a wider and more sophisticated range of vocabulary with precise collocations suited to describing architectural or spatial plans.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and introductory prepositional phrases such as 'The given task is the pictorial representation of two maps depicting...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including article omissions ('added along with barbecue section') and preposition or agreement errors like 'converted in to the coffee bar and place to take away food'. Despite these lapses, the structures are generally controlled and the errors rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the descriptions easily. To progress further, the writer needs to produce a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate tighter control over articles and prepositions.
