Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response attempts to address the task by comparing the two college café plans, presenting an overview and highlighting some key changes such as the addition of outdoor seating, a barbecue, and a salad bar. However, the task is only partially addressed because several descriptions are confusing, inaccurate, or poorly developed. For instance, the student states that 'the entrance of cafe is staff dining rooms' and misinterprets the layout by placing the staff dining rooms at the north-east rather than recognising the structural transition into a coffee bar and take-away area. The overview is overly simplistic, and the overall selection of features lacks clarity and a fully coherent comparative structure, placing the response firmly at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is an attempt to organise the response into an introduction, body description, and concluding observations, but the text lacks a clear overall progression. The use of cohesive devices is frequently mechanical, inaccurate, or confusing, such as 'In contrast, the cafe before redesign is basic nowdays', 'In aditionally', and abrupt transitional phrases like 'or serving area change in hot meals'. Paragraphing is not effectively managed to separate distinct areas of the layout or to distinctly group past versus present features. Referencing is also unclear at times, leaving the reader to guess which parts of the plan are being described, resulting in a disjointed reading experience.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is very limited and basic, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors that strain comprehension. Examples include 'modren' instead of 'modern', 'nowdays' instead of 'nowadays', and awkward collocations like 'the downward of kitchen' and 'staff dining room replace into coffee bar'. The student attempts some task-specific terminology such as 'salad bar', 'take away food', and 'outdoor seating', but overall the lexical range is restricted, and repetitive or inaccurate word forms impede natural communication throughout the response.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response shows a very limited range of grammatical structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent structural faults. There are persistent errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'the cafe before redesigned', 'they are many facilities in before', 'the entrance of cafe', and 'Recycling bins is larger'. Attempts at complex or comparative structures are faulty, as seen in 'the cafe is very modren before than.' Frequent grammatical errors cause noticeable difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control over sentence patterns.
