Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all main parts of the task by reporting the key features of the university café before and after the redesign, thus meeting the requirements for a solid mid-range score. You provide a clear overview in the second sentence, mentioning features that remained unchanged and major alterations like the addition of outside seating. However, some areas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies; for instance, you state that the bin room 'was being increased in size' and later mention it was 'made bigger for recycling bins', whereas the plan shows a relocation and change from a single bin to recycling bins. Additionally, some details like the barbecue and salad bar are mentioned briefly without fully exploring their precise locations or relationships to other features. To reach a higher level, ensure that all reported data points closely mirror the visual prompt without misinterpreting spatial changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay displays a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing specific spatial transformations. You make use of basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'Lastly' to structure your writing. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty. For example, the transition between sentences in the second paragraph ('However, a small on the end of building was a bin room') feels abrupt, and referencing pronouns like 'other' lacks precise clarity. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping could be tightened to separate indoor changes from outdoor additions more distinctly. To achieve a higher band, employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing between sentences remains smooth and unambiguous throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing you to describe the plan using common functional terms such as 'reconstruction', 'kitchen', 'toilets', and 'coffee bar'. You attempt some less common vocabulary, such as 'refurbished' and 'untouched', demonstrating an awareness of appropriate academic style. However, there are notable word choice, spelling, and word form errors that occasionally distract the reader, such as 'appreas' instead of appears, 'demolish' instead of demolition, 'staffing dinning rooms' instead of staff dining rooms, and 'hotmeals' written as a single word. Furthermore, collocational slips like 'inside setting area' instead of indoor seating occur. To improve your lexical score, focus on accurate spelling, correct word forms, and precise collocations related to architectural descriptions.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses and compound structures throughout the response. There are several error-free sentences, particularly in describing static features like 'Kitchen, tables and chairs at centre of cafe and toilets were three areas kept untouched.' However, noticeable grammatical errors persist, including article omissions ('a small on the end of building'), subject-verb agreement issues ('two staff dinning room'), and preposition errors ('at the top of the cafe' vs inside). Punctuation and sentence boundary errors also appear, such as comma splices where clauses are joined loosely ('student can seat and enjoy food'). To reach a higher band, you need to broaden your range of complex structures while maintaining tighter control over grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding articles, plurals, and prepositions.
