Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all major parts of the task by reporting the main features and making clear comparisons between the past and present layouts of the college cafe. The student provides a comprehensive overview of the spatial changes, noting the conversion of employee dining rooms into a take-away food and coffee bar area, as well as the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and barbecue. While all parts of the prompt are addressed, some details are slightly under-developed or generalized, which places this aspect solidly within the expectations for this band level. The progression from the earlier layout to the current setup is clearly conveyed, and the data is accurately represented overall without significant omissions or inventions.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory paraphrase to the body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overall summary, and detailed comparisons. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, with transitional phrases and referencing that occasionally feel repetitive or awkward, such as the frequent use of 'while' and 'whereas' to contrast sections. Cohesive devices are functional, but referencing between sentences is not always completely smooth, meaning the writing does not fully achieve the flexibility required for higher band levels.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'tranformation', 'diversified', and 'redevelopment'. However, there are notable spelling errors and inaccurate word choices throughout the text, including 'tranformation' instead of transformation, 'form' instead of from, 'foood' instead of food, and 'recyling' instead of recycling. Furthermore, some phrasing is awkward or unnatural, such as 'how it was looks at present' and 'working mult functions'. These lexical and spelling errors occur with some frequency and occasionally cause minor strain for the reader, though communication remains clear enough to grasp the intended information.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting comparative structures and relative clauses. However, there are frequent grammatical errors in verb forms, tense consistency, and prepositions within grammatical patterns. Examples of errors include 'after redevelopment how it was looks at present', 'features are remain retained', 'staff dining room was located', and 'Sealed bar was newly build'. Punctuation and article usage also show persistent inaccuracies, such as missing articles before singular nouns ('salad bar was newly build') and incorrect capitalization or sentence boundaries. These errors reflect a limited control over complex sentence structures and place the grammatical accuracy within the lower band.
