Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the main changes between the two plans, noting key additions such as the salad bar, take-away counter, and outdoor seating. However, some aspects of the response remain under-developed or lack full clarity. For instance, the mention of 'five benches outdoor seating' introduces specific details that are either repetitive or slightly imprecise compared to the visual data. The overview is present, but the selection and reporting of features could have been structured more cohesively to ensure every main change is highlighted with equal precision and fully developed.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, successfully guiding the reader through the transformation of the cafeteria using chronological and spatial references such as 'Overall', 'To begin, with layout', and 'The latest features that were added'. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. For example, the sentence opening 'To begin, with layout of the orginal plan layout was retained' feels clunky and contains awkward referencing. Paragraphing is attempted, though the division of ideas could be smoother to ensure a clearer logical progression from the general overview to specific indoor and outdoor modifications.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student displays an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less-common terms like 'renovated', 'facilities', and 'enviromentally friendly'. However, there are notable spelling errors ('takaway', 'orginal', 'take way foo', 'enviromentally') and awkward word choices ('five benches outdoor seating', 'for coffee lovers'). These lexical inaccuracies do not impede communication, as the general meaning remains clear, but they prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Developing greater precision in collocations and improving spelling control are key areas for improvement.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over structure through relative clauses and passive constructions. Nevertheless, there are several grammatical errors and punctuation lapses throughout the text. Examples include missing articles ('illustrates plan of a college cafeteria', 'added salad bar'), unnecessary commas ('To begin, with layout...'), and awkward prepositions or verb phrases ('The cafeteria has has two new doors'). While these errors cause occasional friction for the reader, they rarely impede overall communication, placing the grammatical performance solidly within this band.
