Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response makes an attempt to describe the changes shown in the plans, but it only partially addresses the task requirements. While some main features are identified, such as the replacement of the serving area with hot meals and the addition of the outdoor seating and barbecue area, other parts of the visual data are misreported or confused. For instance, the student states that the staff dining rooms remain in the same place when the plans clearly show they have been replaced by a take-away food counter and coffee bar. Furthermore, the selection of information lacks clear overview and structure, leading to a limited and under-developed summary of the overall transformations.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The information and ideas are not arranged coherently. The text lacks clear paragraphing, being presented as a single dense block of text, which creates difficulty in following the progression of ideas. Cohesive devices are minimal, mechanical, or inaccurate, relying heavily on repetitive phrasing like 'in the new design' and comma splices rather than proper conjunctive links or logical transitions between sentences. As a result, the relationships between the various alterations to the college cafe are not clearly signposted for the reader.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and repetitive, which strains comprehension in several places. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'changing' instead of 'changes', 'rebuild' instead of 'redesigned', and 'party place' instead of 'area'. While the student attempts to name some specific features from the prompts such as 'salad bar', 'hot meals', and 'recycling bins', the overall range is basic and inadequate for a precise academic summary. Frequent awkward phrasing restricts the clarity of the description.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The grammatical structures are extremely limited, consisting almost entirely of simple sentences joined incorrectly by commas rather than full stops or proper subordinating conjunctions. There are frequent, persistent errors in grammar, including missing auxiliary verbs, incorrect prepositions, and faulty subject-verb agreement, such as 'new cafe have more place' and 'Two more doors opens'. Punctuation is also poorly managed throughout the response, resulting in run-on sentences that cause significant difficulty for the reader.
