Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, and it makes relevant comparisons between the two layouts. An overview is provided, highlighting the main changes such as the addition of outdoor seating and the take away food bar. However, some areas remain slightly under-developed or lack precision, such as describing the exact locations of certain internal alterations. To reach a higher level, the overview could be more fully integrated into the introduction, and the description of specific transformations could be elaborated with greater detail and clearer relationships between the previous and current features.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from the introduction, to the overview, to the past layout, and finally to the present layout. Paragraphing is utilised to separate distinct parts of the task effectively. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'Before redesigning' and 'After redesigning', which help structure the comparison. However, referencing and cohesion can at times feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in sentence openings. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider variety of transitional phrases and ensure smoother linking between sentences to enhance the overall flow of the text without relying on formulaic transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully communicating the main features of the cafe plans. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'redesigning', 'prominent changes', and 'Recycling bins', though there are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word choices, such as 'Tow staff dining rooms' (instead of 'Two') and 'place for kitchen has been unchanged' (rather than 'location of the kitchen remains unchanged'). Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to incorporate a wider range of precise lexical items, improve collocations related to spatial descriptions, and ensure greater accuracy in word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, though the range of structures is somewhat limited. There are frequent grammatical errors in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, articles, and prepositions, such as 'The given plans shows' (instead of 'show'), 'many prominent changes had been done' (instead of 'have been made'), and 'in the north-west corner of he cafe'. Punctuation and capitalization are also inconsistent at times. While communication is generally maintained despite these errors, the frequency of inaccuracies prevents the grammar from reaching a higher standard. To improve, the writer must focus on mastering basic agreement, accurate tense selection for describing changes over time, and careful proofreading to eliminate slips.
