Student answer (Band 7.0)

The diagram illustrates changes that took place after redesigning a college cafe.

Overall, the cafe was upgraded and has expanded its dining space. The new plan not only offers indoor dining space but an outdoor eating area.Several distinct areas in the cafe have been changed to serve different kinds of foods such as cold and hot food.

The newly renovated cafe now has a provision for taking meals in an open space outside the cafe.New additions including a barbeque serving spot were made to the current design.

The new setup clearly shows where different kinds of food and beverages will be served. To be more specific there are now distinct spots in the cafe where salads, hot meals and barbercue are served. At the center of the shop, what used to be staff dining rooms was replaced by a Take away and a Coffee bar.

No changes were made to the toilets and kitchen, both mantained their old position in the shop. Although waste area did not shift, recycle bins were placed instead of regular trash containers.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear summary of the changes between the two college cafe plans. Key features are highlighted, such as the addition of the outdoor seating area, the barbecue spot, the salad bar, and the conversion of the staff dining rooms into a take-away counter and coffee bar. The overview correctly identifies that the cafe was upgraded and expanded, and relevant comparisons are made regarding the kitchen and toilets remaining unchanged. While the reporting covers the main developments well, some ideas are slightly repetitive regarding the food service areas, which prevents the response from reaching the highest bands. Overall, the information is accurately selected and grounded directly in the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to specific details about the layout changes. Paragraphing is used to group related information, such as the outdoor additions in the second paragraph and the interior adjustments in the third. Cohesive devices are employed, although some transitions feel slightly mechanical or abrupt, such as the shift between paragraphs without fully smooth linking. Referencing is generally clear, but occasional punctuation errors in spacing slightly disrupt the smooth flow of the reading experience. To reach a higher standard, the transitions between sentences could be more sophisticated and seamlessly integrated.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as "renovated", "provision", and "distinct". However, there are some minor word-choice and spelling inaccuracies that reflect a mid-level band, including "barbercue" instead of barbecue, and phrasing like "serving spot" which could be more polished. Despite these occasional slips, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main features of the plans clearly and effectively without impeding the reader's understanding. To improve further, the writer should focus on precise collocations and ensure absolute accuracy in spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over past and present tenses as required to describe the changes ("was upgraded", "now has", "were replaced"). There are some grammatical errors and punctuation issues present, such as missing spaces after periods and a minor comma omission in introductory clauses (e.g., "To be more specific there are now..."), but these errors rarely impede communication and do not obscure the meaning. The sentence structures show a reasonable variety, although simpler constructions predominate. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and refine punctuation.
