Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. An appropriate overview is provided at the beginning, highlighting key changes such as the addition of the barbecue and outdoor seating, as well as the transformation of the staff dining rooms. However, some ideas are more fully developed than others; for instance, the description of the new outdoor area includes extra commentary about profit perspective that extends beyond simple reporting of factual data. To reach a higher level, the response should maintain a strictly objective tone and ensure that all major spatial changes, such as the relocation or conversion of every internal section, are reported with equal clarity and without unnecessary speculation.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear progression from an introductory overview into body paragraphs detailing specific structural changes. Paragraphing is used to separate the general introduction from the detailed spatial comparisons. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on repetitive phrasing, and referencing could be smoother, as seen in the slightly abrupt transitions between sentences in the second body paragraph. To achieve a higher standard, the writer needs to employ a wider and more flexible range of cohesive devices to link ideas more fluidly, ensuring that sentences flow naturally from one point to the next without feeling disjointed.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic features of the maps through appropriate terms such as 'redesign', 'renovation', 'serving area', and 'redevelopment'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, such as 'installations' and 'revenues', but encounters some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, for example writing 'outsidet' instead of 'outside' and 'designes' instead of 'designs'. To improve this score further, the response needs a more precise and varied selection of lexical items to describe spatial modifications, while completely eliminating minor spelling and slip-of-the-pen errors that disrupt the fluency of the writing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some control over sentence structure when describing spatial changes. However, there are noticeable grammatical errors throughout the text, including missing articles (e.g., 'Salad bar also added in tables and chairs area'), incorrect prepositions, and verb form inconsistencies (e.g., 'The maps below illustrates'). While these errors do not seriously impede overall communication, they occur regularly enough to prevent the writing from achieving higher bands. A stronger performance would require a wider variety of error-free complex structures, alongside more careful attention to subject-verb agreement and article usage.
