Student answer (Band 5.0)
The map shows the design of collage cafe before it was redesigned and how it is today.
Before renewation, when you entered the cafe there is a larger rectangular space with alot of tables and chairs. on the left side if enterence there was a small dustbin and next to it there was toilels at the corner. Infront of enterance doors there was the two small cabins which was reserved for staff dining rooms. At the end of the hall, there is an extencion of another small rectangualar hall which is is divided into to parts, beside the door there was a small rectangular srea where all the food and drinks was served and through the wall their was a kitchen.
Now, after the renewation, kitchen and toilets remain at its place, the serving area is now only reserved for the hot meals. Staff dining area has been replaced by the takeaway food and coffee bar. At the end of the hall, infront of kitchen door, a new salad bar is introduced. Bin is replaced by the recycling bin and next to toilets, a door is installed to access the outdoor seating. the outdoor seating is as huge in length as indoor seating but opposite of salad bar, a barbecue station is placed.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the task only partially and lacks a clear, overarching overview of the main changes. While the writer attempts to report various features, some descriptions are inaccurate or confused, such as misidentifying the positions of rooms and entrances. For instance, the staff dining rooms along the north wall are incorrectly described as being in front of the entrance doors, and the spatial relationships between the salad bar, kitchen door, and outdoor seating are somewhat under-developed and unclear. To reach a higher level, the response needs to present a clear, distinct overview highlighting the principal changes—such as the conversion of staff rooms into a takeaway and coffee bar and the addition of outdoor facilities—and report the spatial transformations with greater accuracy and clarity.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response shows some organisation with a logical division between the past layout and current layout paragraphs, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used rather simplistically and repetitively, relying heavily on basic time markers like 'Before renewation' and 'Now, after the renewation'. Furthermore, referencing is occasionally imprecise, making it difficult to follow the exact locations of features, such as using vague directional phrases like 'at its place' or 'at the end of the hall'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structure of the paragraphs suffers from run-on sentences and a lack of smooth transitions between spatial details. To improve, the writer should employ a wider and more accurate range of cohesive devices and ensure that referencing pronouns and transitional markers clearly guide the reader through the comparison of the two plans.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The lexical range is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The vocabulary used is often basic and repetitive, with frequent spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'collage' instead of 'college', 'renewation' instead of 'renovation', 'alot' instead of 'a lot', 'toilels', 'Infront', 'extencion', 'rectangualar', and 'srea'. While the writer attempts some less common terms like 'introduced' and 'station', inaccuracies in collocation and word form are noticeable throughout the text. These errors occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to use a broader and more precise range of vocabulary related to architectural changes and spatial descriptions, while eliminating basic spelling and word-formation errors.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic clauses linked by coordinating conjunctions. Attempts at more complex structures are frequently faulty, leading to grammar errors such as subject-verb agreement issues (e.g., 'there is a larger rectangular space', 'there was two small cabins', 'kitchen and toilets remain at its place') and incorrect prepositional usage ('at the corner', 'in front of enterance'). Punctuation control is also weak, with run-on sentences and a lack of proper capitalisation at the beginning of sentences. Frequent errors occur throughout the text, which can cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer should practice forming complex sentences accurately, paying closer attention to subject-verb agreement, articles, and punctuation.
