Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview of the college cafe before and after its redesign, highlighting the main changes such as the addition of outdoor seating, a salad bar, and the conversion of staff dining rooms. It earns a solid rating because it clearly reports the salient features and makes relevant comparisons, such as noting that the kitchen size and toilets remained unchanged while new facilities like a coffee bar and barbecue were introduced. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or lack precise spatial details, preventing it from reaching a higher level where all features would be thoroughly extended and supported.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction and conclusion, making the progression of changes relatively easy to follow. Paragraphing is used to group related ideas together, such as the major structural additions and the areas that remained the same. Cohesion is sometimes mechanical or relies on repetitive phrasing, however, with devices like 'moreover' and 'the other major changes includes' feeling slightly formulaic. Referencing and logical transitions between sentences could be smoothed out to establish a more natural flow throughout the description.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to architectural changes and campus facilities, such as 'revamp', 'overhauled', and 'conversion'. However, there are noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'after redesigned' instead of 'after being redesigned' or 'redesigning element' instead of 'redesign feature', along with missing articles and awkward phrasing. These lexical slips do not impede communication, but they restrict the response from demonstrating the precision and flexibility expected at higher levels.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and participial structures. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues like 'changes includes' and prepositional or structural inaccuracies such as 'in newly structured cafe' and 'the additional entry have been created'. While these errors persist throughout the text, they rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the intended comparisons and descriptions without significant strain.
