The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The provided map illustrates how a college cafe has developed from before redesign period to its present time.
Taking a birds eye view of the map , it is elucidate that the cafe has become considerably more modern by constructing outdoor setting area and barbecue while the inner sitting area have been retained.
It is consipicuous that , There is no outdoor sitting area in the cafe before redesigning, now a considerable area has been added for outdoor sitting along with a barbecue. Additionally, The serving area in which all food and drinks were involved has been replaced by hot meals only.
Moving further, Initially there were a substantial area located for staff dinning rooms , which has been transformed into two equal sections of Take Away food and Coffee bar. However, Indoor sitting area coupled with Toilets remain identical while, Recycling bins has been expanded. Strinkingly, Salad bar has been added in the South- west corner of the cafe.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by presenting a clear overview and highlighting the main changes between the two plans, such as the addition of the outdoor seating, barbecue, and salad bar, alongside the transformation of the staff dining rooms. The main features are selected well and compared adequately. However, there is a minor spatial misinterpretation in the final paragraph, where the salad bar is described as being in the south-west corner when the plan places it along the western wall. Despite this slight over-generalisation or inaccuracy in spatial reporting, the overall information is clearly communicated, placing the response securely at this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The report displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at logical progression from an introductory overview to specific body paragraphs detailing the modifications. Paragraphing is used to separate different areas of the cafe. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, seen through repetitive transitions like 'Additionally' and 'Moving further', alongside occasional awkward referencing. While the logical flow is generally maintained, these mechanical cohesive devices and occasional slight structural awkwardness prevent the response from achieving a higher level of fluid progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common lexical items such as 'conspicuous', 'transformed', and 'retained'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'elucidate' instead of 'elucidated' or 'evident', 'setting' instead of 'seating', and 'consipicuous', which slightly impede the natural flow of the writing. These lexical slips and occasional awkward collocations demonstrate the limitations characteristic of this band, showing an effort to use varied vocabulary that is not yet fully controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but it is marred by frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and article usage. Examples include 'from before redesign period to its present time', 'it is elucidate that', and commas placed inappropriately before clauses, as seen in 'It is consipicuous that , There is no outdoor sitting area'. Subject-verb agreement and prepositional patterns also show inconsistencies, such as 'There is ... no outdoor sitting area ... now a considerable area has been added' and 'area located for staff dinning rooms'. These recurring errors in basic and complex structures require some effort from the reader to parse, though communication is ultimately preserved.
