Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by presenting an overview of the college cafe before and after its redesign, noting key spatial changes such as the addition of the salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating. However, some aspects of the response remain under-developed or unclear, such as the vague description of changes in the northern section where staff dining rooms were replaced by a take-away food counter and a coffee bar. While the main features are successfully reported and comparisons are made, the selection and extension of details lack precision in places, keeping the response at this level. Eleven words copied directly from the prompt were excluded from the official word count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement, dividing the description into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the 'before' and 'after' layouts. However, cohesion is often faulty and mechanical. Transition phrases such as 'On the one hand', 'mean before design', and 'On the other hands' are used incorrectly or awkwardly to sequence information. Paragraphing is present, but referencing between sentences is not always clear, which disrupts the logical progression and prevents the writing from achieving a higher level of cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical range is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe common physical features and alterations on the plans, such as 'kitchen', 'serving area', 'barbecue', and 'recycling bins'. The writer attempts less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'changing' instead of 'changes', 'diffirents' and 'changments', and 'intrusting' instead of 'interested'. These lexical slips and spelling inaccuracies do not seriously impede overall communication, but they restrict the response to this band level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complexity frequently result in structural errors. There are frequent issues with verb forms and tenses, such as 'The given picture describe' instead of 'describes', 'there is a kitchen were seen', and 'a lot of diffirents things... were seen'. Errors also occur in prepositions and agreement, such as 'in cafe' and 'near to the toilets'. Punctuation control is weak, with run-on phrasing and missing commas. These errors require some effort to decode, though they rarely obscure the core meaning completely.
