Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a comparison of the college canteen before and after its redesign. An adequate overview is provided at the beginning, noting the substantial transformation and the retention of certain core features like the kitchen and toilets. Key features and changes are reported, such as the conversion of the serving area into hot meals and the replacement of staff dining rooms with a takeaway area and coffee bar. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or less precise, such as the description of the new outdoor area and barbecue. The selection of information is generally relevant, meeting the expectations for a solid performance at this level, though more fully extended comparisons would be needed to reach the next band.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically, moving from an introductory overview to specific details regarding the north, west, and outdoor sections. Paragraphing is used to group related ideas together. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, with awkward transitions such as 'Focusing initially at the north side' and 'Focus on the west side of area'. Referencing and linking devices are occasionally strained, which disrupts the natural flow of progression. To move higher, the student needs to ensure smoother transitions between sentences and paragraphs and use cohesive devices more flexibly and naturally throughout the text.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to the visual data, such as 'substantial transformation', 'demolished', and 'redeveloped'. However, there are noticeable lexical and spelling inaccuracies that reflect a band in this tier, such as 'tiolets' instead of toilets, 'recycle bin' instead of recycling bins, and awkward phrasing like 'hot meals reservation'. Word choice and collocations are occasionally imprecise, as seen in 'transforms this area into two parts' or 'outdoor dinning'. While these errors do not seriously impede communication, they prevent the response from achieving a higher score due to a lack of precise control over less common vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures throughout the text, such as 'several facilities were demolished' (passive voice error), 'kitchen area was remains same' (fused verb forms), and missing articles or pluralisation issues like 'bin were place'. Punctuation is also sparse in places. These errors occur frequently enough to impact readability and reflect the characteristics of this grammatical band, where simple structures are handled better than complex ones, and errors persist across various sentence types.
