Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. An appropriate overview is provided at the beginning, noting key developments such as the expansion of services and the addition of outdoor seating. However, some aspects of the comparison are slightly under-developed or repetitive, such as the descriptions of the kitchen and toilets remaining unchanged, which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. The selection of data is generally relevant and accurate, effectively capturing features like the new salad bar, the conversion of staff rooms, and the introduction of the barbecue and outdoor seating areas.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introduction to the initial layout and finally the redesigned layout. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to separate the different sections of the visual data. Cohesive devices are employed, such as 'While', 'Before development', and 'After redesign', though referencing is at times mechanical or slightly repetitive in sentence openings. Paragraph structures are functional, but clearer signposting between the contrasting elements of the two plans would elevate the organizational quality further.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The lexical range is adequate for the task, successfully conveying spatial locations and modifications using vocabulary such as 'redevelopment', 'converted', and 'positioned'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, but this is occasionally accompanied by word-choice errors or awkward phrasing, such as 'North-western site', ' barbecue meal are introduced', and 'Outdooor seating'. Spelling is generally acceptable, with only minor slips like the double 'o' in outdoor. These vocabulary errors do not impede communication, placing the response securely in the mid-range for lexical resource.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is inconsistent. There are frequent errors in articles, prepositions, and verb forms, such as 'Cafe is expanded' (passive voice error), 'Table and chairs section in south', 'staff dining rooms' (uncapitalized start), and 'The considerable changes are take place'. These errors in grammar and punctuation occur frequently throughout the text, though they rarely impede communication. To reach a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over complex sentence structures and reduce the density of basic grammatical inaccuracies.
