Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by selecting and reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. An overview is provided that outlines the key changes, such as the additions of the salad bar, barbecue, and outdoor seating, alongside what remained unchanged like the kitchen and toilets. Key comparisons are made between the old plan and the current layout. However, some aspects of the task are developed more fully than others; for instance, the description of the new take-away food and coffee bar areas is cut off abruptly at the end of the text. To reach a higher band, the student should ensure all selected features are fully described and expanded upon without abrupt endings, while maintaining clear coverage of spatial relationships across both diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The essay presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory paraphrase to the overview and body paragraphs detailing the specific changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction and overview from the detailed body points. However, cohesion at times feels a bit mechanical or repetitive in phrasing, and the incomplete final sentence disrupts the flow of information. Referencing is generally functional, but smoother transitional devices and more sophisticated linking phrases would improve the overall cohesion. To progress further, the writer should ensure complete sentences throughout and employ a wider, more natural variety of cohesive devices to guide the reader effortlessly through the spatial comparisons.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate to accomplish the task, allowing the student to communicate basic features of the maps such as 'kitchen', 'toilets', 'salad bar', and 'outdoor seating'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'redevelopments', 'modification', and 'capacity', but these attempts occasionally suffer from inaccuracies in word choice or collocation, such as 'maps illustrates' (subject-verb agreement/word form issue) and 'staffi' (incomplete word). Spelling and word-choice errors are present but do not entirely impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to expand their lexical range and demonstrate more precise control over less common vocabulary, avoiding incomplete word endings and ensuring correct word forms and collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like 'It can be seen that...' and relative clauses. There are several grammatical errors scattered throughout the text, including missing articles ('The two maps illustrates', 'in old plan', 'on the east side'), incorrect prepositions ('at the top of the left corner'), and an incomplete sentence structure at the very end of the response. While these errors do not completely obscure the meaning, they are noticeable and occur regularly. To move up to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, particularly article usage, prepositions, and subject-verb agreement, while producing a higher proportion of error-free complex sentences.
