Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. A clear overview of the transformation is provided in the opening, and key changes are highlighted, such as the addition of the outdoor seating and barbecue area, the replacement of the staff dining rooms with a takeaway counter and coffee bar, and the introduction of a salad bar. While some details are slightly generalized, such as grouping multiple changes together, the response effectively selects and compares the relevant information as required by the task descriptors for this level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response presents an overall coherent arrangement of information, with a clear attempt to group changes logically by location and feature. However, the progression is somewhat hindered by mechanical cohesive devices and repetitive transitional phrases such as 'Firstly', 'After that', and 'Additionally'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the organization within the body paragraphs feels slightly disjointed and repetitive, moving back and forth between the indoor and outdoor modifications. Referencing is occasionally unclear, which prevents the essay from achieving a more fluid and natural progression throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating specific terms from the prompt and visual data, such as 'redesigning', 'take away counter', 'coffee bar', and 'salad bar'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though these are occasionally marred by word choice and spelling inaccuracies, such as 'recyclying' instead of 'recycling', 'key away' instead of 'takeaway', and 'rennovation' instead of 'renovation'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they reflect the limitations characteristic of this band level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, but control over grammar and punctuation is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors in articles, prepositions, and sentence construction, such as 'The two maps chart shows', 'there was no change in areas having tables', 'they was no change', and 'Also the there are two more doors added for the entry and exit were installed'. These frequent errors in grammar and punctuation can occasionally cause slight difficulty for the reader, though they rarely obscure the overall meaning of the report.
