Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign. A clear overview is provided, highlighting the expansion of seating space and the introduction of new facilities. Key changes are well-selected and compared, such as the conversion of staff dining rooms into a takeaway food and coffee bar section, the addition of outdoor seating, a salad bar, and a barbecue area. While some details could be further extended, the overall coverage is solid, presenting a clear summary of the visual data that meets the requirements for a well-rounded response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from an introductory overview to specific body paragraphs detailing the changes. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overview, and specific features. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, with occasional awkward transitions, such as 'However, the staff dining rooms were converted...' where a contrast marker is not entirely necessary. Referencing and linking devices are generally functional, but the flow between sentences could be smoother to achieve a higher level of cohesion throughout the text.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the layout changes with some success. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word forms, such as 'altrenation' instead of 'alterations', 'introudce' instead of 'introduced', 'facalities' instead of 'facilities', and 'foos' instead of 'foods'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary items like 'utilization' and 'redesigned', but inaccuracies persist. While these lexical errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score due to frequent slips in spelling and precision.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, but control over grammar is limited by frequent errors. There are issues with verb tense consistency and auxiliary verbs, such as 'Given maps shows', 'how cafe was looked', 'cafe do not have', and 'number of bin were increased'. Article usage is also inconsistent throughout the response, for instance, missing articles before singular countable nouns like 'college cafe' and 'outdoor seating area'. These grammatical errors and inaccuracies in punctuation require some effort from the reader to parse, though they do not entirely obscure the meaning.
