Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features and making comparisons between the two plans of the college cafe. The overview attempts to capture the key transformation, noting that the cafe now has a wider range of space and additional amenities. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack precision. For example, details regarding the spatial layout are somewhat vague, and certain features like the barbecue are mentioned without fully integrating them into a clear spatial comparison. To move to a higher band, the response would need to present a more fully developed overview and provide a more comprehensive, well-supported comparison of all major changes shown in the diagrams.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a coherent overall arrangement, dividing the information into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs discussing the past and present layouts. Cohesive devices are used to signal progression, such as 'To begin with', 'Moreover', and 'On the other hand'. However, the cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, and referencing is not always clear, which disrupts the natural flow of information. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of ideas could be more logical. To achieve a higher level of cohesion, the writer should ensure that cohesive ties are managed more flexibly and that sentences follow a clearer, more logical sequence throughout.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe the general features of the cafe. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, such as 'blueprint', 'redesing', and 'outlate', but these are accompanied by noticeable word-form and spelling errors. Other vocabulary choices are repetitive or imprecise, such as 'tinny area' instead of tiny area and 'speceas' instead of spacious. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they reflect a limited range and accuracy. To improve this criterion, the writer should focus on expanding their range of appropriate synonyms, mastering word forms, and checking spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, though attempts at complex structures often contain errors. There are frequent mistakes in verb tenses, subject-verb agreement, and articles, such as 'The both the blueprint are', 'before redesign have', and 'cafe they have'. Punctuation and prepositions also show persistent inaccuracies. Although communication is rarely entirely blocked, the frequency of errors is noticeable. To reach a higher band, the writer must improve control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct verb agreement, and reduce errors in articles and plurals.
