Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear overview of the changes and reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after the redesign. The student covers key spatial transformations, such as the replacement of staff dining rooms with a take away food station and coffee bar, the addition of the salad bar, and the creation of an outdoor seating and barbecue area. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in localizing features, such as placing the salad bar in the central left side rather than noting it along the western wall. The overview effectively captures the general nature of the redevelopments, meeting the expectations for a balanced summary.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text presents a coherent overall arrangement and a logical progression of ideas from an introductory overview to body paragraphs detailing specific spatial changes. Paragraphing is used adequately to structure the response. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or features awkward transitions, such as the sudden shift introduced by 'However the kitchen...' at the end of the second paragraph. Referencing is generally clear, but mechanical cohesive devices prevent the response from achieving a higher band. Overall, the information flows reasonably well, guiding the reader through the comparison of the two maps.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'redevelopments', 'accommodates', and 'renovation process'. However, there are notable word choice and spelling inaccuracies that reflect a lower band, including 'sigificant' (significant), 'seatings' (seating), 'fullfill' (fulfill), 'beed' (been), 'cofee' (coffee), 'are now devoted only for' (devoted only to), and 'areaoutside' (area outside). Despite these lexical errors and minor slips, communication is not severely impeded, and the vocabulary remains minimally sufficient to describe the visual data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt at structures like relative clauses ('which previously served...') and subordinate clauses. However, control over grammar is inconsistent, leading to frequent errors. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues, such as 'the serving area... are now devoted' (should be 'is'), incorrect prepositions like 'on the opposite side' and 'on the bottom right area', and missing articles. Additionally, punctuation errors occur, such as comma splices or missing commas. These errors require some effort to decode at times, placing the response firmly in the target band.
