The first map shows a structure of college cafe before it was redesigned and the second map illustrates the developments made after redesigning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing a clear summary of the changes shown in the two maps. The overview outlines the principal developments, such as the introduction of outdoor seating and new functional areas like the coffee bar and take-away counter. Key features are selected and reported appropriately, including the transformation of the former staff dining rooms and the addition of the salad bar and barbecue spot. The ideas are extended and supported with relevant details from the visual data. However, the response tends to over-generalise slightly in the second paragraph without fully elaborating on all minor spatial shifts, which prevents it from reaching a higher band level.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a clear overall progression and logical organization. The essay is divided into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and body paragraphs that methodically group the structural changes, moving from the north/interior changes to the new exterior and auxiliary features. Cohesive devices such as 'After renovation of the cafe,' 'Although,' and 'Furthermore' are used to connect ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct aspects of the redesign. To achieve a higher level, the integration of cohesive ties could be made more flexible and seamless, avoiding minor abrupt shifts between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'developments,' 'renovation,' and 'functional transformation,' although there are several noticeable lexical errors and awkward collocations. Examples include 'numerous changes occured in cafe' (missing article), 'seperate' (spelling error), 'guest' instead of 'customers' or 'patrons,' and 'indoor setup area.' Furthermore, word forms occasionally lack precision, such as 'significant changes includes' (subject-verb agreement error stemming from word choice). These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect a restricted control over word choice and spelling that limits the score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing introductory subordinate clauses such as 'After renovation of the cafe, there are few notable changes...'. However, there are frequent grammatical errors throughout the text, including article omissions ('structure of college cafe', 'in cafe'), pluralisation inconsistencies ('One of the major change', 'Another significant changes includes'), and prepositions inside grammatical patterns ('accommodate more guest by offering'). Punctuation is generally acceptable, but the persistence of basic grammatical slips across simple and complex structures means that error-free sentences are not frequent enough to attain a higher band.
