The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The given diagrams illustrate a college cafe before its redesigning and after it was redesigned.
Overall, new areas are added. Also, the space is extended equipped with many essentials for the cafe, however, some areas are left the same way they were before the redesign.
The space below toilets is increased, where barbeque and outdoor seating is added. Moreover, the staff dining rooms are converted into take away food and coffee bar individually. Additionally, the bin is increased to numerous recycling bins, comparatively taking more space than before. Also, a new salad bar is equipped, left to tables and chairs. The serving area is also renovated to hot meals place.
Despite the changes, some places remained the same way. The tables and chairs were at the exact place as in the past, just a little smaller than before. The toilets too, were not replaced just like the kitchen at the top.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by outlining the main changes and features of the college cafe before and after its redesign. An overview is provided, highlighting both the additions and the elements that remained unchanged. Key features such as the conversion of staff dining rooms into a take away food section and coffee bar, the addition of the salad bar, outdoor seating, and a barbecue are reported. However, some areas are slightly under-developed or described with minor inaccuracies regarding spatial relations, which prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Overall, the information is relevant and accurately reflects the provided diagrams.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response displays a coherent overall arrangement with a clear division into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing specific alterations and constants. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'Additionally'. However, referencing and progression are occasionally mechanical or slightly repetitive in structure, such as the frequent reliance on 'Also' to start sentences. Paragraphing is used sufficiently to structure the comparisons, but smoother transitions between the indoor layout changes and the outdoor additions would enhance the logical flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the intended meaning with terms like 'redesign', 'converted', 'renovated', and 'recycling bins'. There are attempts to use less common vocabulary, though some word choices and collocations feel slightly unnatural, such as 'redesigning' instead of 'redesign' and 'hot meals place' instead of 'hot food counter'. Spelling and word-choice errors are present, but they do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the description of the visual data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as concessive clauses ('Despite the changes, some places remained the same way') and relative clauses. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, including missing prepositions or awkward phrasings like 'equipped with many essentials for the cafe' and 'left to tables and chairs' instead of 'to the left of'. However, these errors are relatively minor, occur alongside correct structures, and rarely impede communication.
