The plans below show a college cafe before it was redesigned and how it looks now.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The maps illustrate the before and after layout of a college cafe prior to renovation.
Overall, the sitting area is now more bigger with a vast menu than before. Moreover, some new facilities have been introduced.
The older blueprint of cafe was a simple hall with multiple tables and chairs. When entering the cafe there was a bin on the left side, and toilets were constructed ahead to that bin. If you go staright, there were two staff dining rooms at right side. Moving ahead, there is another room on teh same side, the kitchen and serving area for all kind of food and drink was available there.
Although, today's structure is more advanced and facilitated, some of the objects are at the same place as before such as, tables and chairs, recycle bins, toilets and the kitchen. However the staff dining rooms are now converted into coffe bar and take away food corner. There is a salad bar on the font wall from the entrance. There are two doors on the left side which opens to an outdoor sitting area. moreover, a barbecue grill is now available on the left at open seating area.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the college cafe before and after its redesign, and includes some comparisons. However, some aspects of the task are developed less fully than others. The overview captures general changes, such as the seating area being larger with a wider menu, but misses a few key spatial relationships and details shown on the plans, such as the specific transformation of the serving area into hot meals. Some spatial descriptions are also slightly inaccurate or confusing, such as mentioning the salad bar is on the 'font wall' and the barbecue is on the 'left'. While the main trends and features are outlined, a more precise and fully extended overview of all structural shifts would be needed to reach a higher band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the text into an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs covering the 'before' and 'after' layouts. Information is generally organized logically, moving from past to present. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical. The transitional devices used, such as 'Moreover', 'Although', and 'However', are occasionally applied with awkward punctuation or referencing that is not entirely clear. Paragraphing is present and appropriate for the task, but the logical progression between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother and more carefully managed to fully satisfy higher descriptors.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to architectural changes and campus facilities, such as 'blueprint', 'renovation', and 'facilities'. However, there are notable word-choice and spelling errors that detract from the overall quality. Examples include writing 'sitting' instead of 'seating', 'staright' for 'straight', 'teh' for 'the', 'recycle bins' instead of 'recycling bins', 'font wall' for 'front wall', and 'coffe bar' instead of 'coffee bar'. Furthermore, the phrase 'more bigger' is a lexical/grammatical slip. These errors do not completely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, with attempts at complex structures such as 'When entering the cafe there was a bin...' and 'Although, today's structure is more advanced...'. There are some grammatical errors and punctuation slips throughout the text, including awkward phrasing, missing articles, and incorrect prepositions, such as 'on right side', 'to that bin', and 'on the left at open seating area'. However, these errors rarely impede communication and the meaning remains mostly clear. To progress further, the student needs to produce a greater proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over prepositions and punctuation.
